Like, Totally Rad!
Last night I watched the PBS special "Do You Speak American?" and I really enjoyed it! It's not without its flaws, but it does pack a lot of information in its three hours. That's not to mention all the beautiful footage of various American roadways, towns and cities.
The basic premise of the show is the exploration of different American dialects and slang and how they are changing over time. Basically, it's a documentary about the state of American English in the 21st century. It's filmed from a white, academic perspective and that does seem to influence some of the segments, but overall it's fascinating and educational.
What's even more impressive is the website for the show at www.pbs.org/speak/. This is an incredible site! It has lots of information and fun features on how Americans talk and how language is changing in this country. Some of the essays are a bit too technical, but mostly the content is entertaining, educational or both. I'm definitely putting it in my links!
That's all for now. I'll blog at y'all later.
