This week's Top Five On Friday from the Music Memoirs is:
Top 5 Duets
This won't be an easy list for me because I don't really listen to traditional "let's get two superstars together" duet songs. I'll definitely give it a shot, though, so here we go.
1) "Misery" by Steven Tyler and Pink. They both have awesome, bluesy voices and they really work well together on this gem of a song from Pink's second album.
2) "Back Back Train" by Aerosmith (Joe Perry and guest Tracy Bonham on lyrics). This dark blues number is off Aerosmith's latest, "Honkin' On Bobo." Joe shows off his deep, intense voice and Tracy backs him up well with her moaning and cooing. She's from Eugene, so hooray for that!
3) "Release" by Afro Celt Sound System featuring Sinead O'Connor. Sinead handles lead vocals on this special song from Volume 2 of the Afro Celt Sound System. Group member Iarla O'Lionard also has a few lyrics in Gaelic on the song, so this is technically a duet!
4) "Portland, Oregon" by Loretta Lynn and Jack White. In addition to being a rocking song yet still keeping country roots, this song mentions a city in my home state! Somehow, having Jack White of the White Stripes and Loretta Lynn in the same song works surprisingly well.
5) "Love Me Like That" by Michelle Branch featuring Sheryl Crow. This is just a wonderful song with awesome acoustic guitar and inspired vocal performances by both Michelle and Sheryl.
Wow, that actually wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Even so, I'm hard pressed to think of too many other duets that I like or have even heard.
