I'm not wasting any time in writing my 1001st blog post. I was watching a movie last night and noticed something really interesting and geeky.

I was watching "Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King" and I couldn't believe what I heard during the scene where King Theoden dies. When Eowyn is leaning over her uncle Theoden and hearing his last words, she says "I'm going to save you" and Theoden replies "You already did."

What's so strange about that, you ask? Well, consider the scene in Return Of The Jedi (hmm, both movie titles say "Return of the . . .") where Luke is leaning over his dying father Anakin. Luke says to Anakin "I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you" and Anakin replies "You already have."

Whoa! Wait a minute! That's almost the same dialogue in both movies, during nearly identical death scenes! You think Peter Jackson put that line in there as an homage to Return Of The Jedi? I certainly think he did!

Let me consult the book and see if the "You already did" line is in there . . .

No! In fact, Theoden in the book doesn't even know that Eowyn came to the battle!

Seems to me that Peter Jackson put into his own epic movie a little tribute to the Star Wars movies he so loves.

I only noticed that because, before watching Return Of The King, I had recently also seen Return Of The Jedi. I got a kick out of noticing that little detail, and I'm sure anyone who loves both Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings will get a kick out of that too. Did anyone else notice this before I did?
