A local used bookstore (their name is, oddly, The Book Store) is going out of business and having a liquidation sale. Prices are cheap, cheap, cheap! Reading is one of my addictions, so of course I had to go there and see what was available.
I felt guilty for not giving them more business - until I went there today and was reminded why I never went there much in the first place. A large portion of their books are the romance-novel type. That's not really my thing. They also don't have too many recognizable titles or authors. Sure, they have a very large selection of books, but I've never heard of most of them.
Sometimes a large selection works against you. I simply don't have enough time to browse around the whole store, reading the back covers and searching for anything that sounds interesting. Also, I'm trying to curb my spending, so I didn't want to buy too many.
I did purchase five things, though: A couple Grisham novels (The Client and The Pelican Brief); "Omerta" by Mario Puzo; a ratty copy of "Sometimes A Great Notion" by Oregon author Ken Kesey; and a book novel called "The Tailor Of Panama" by John le Carre. It sounds good - a spy who's also "Exclusive tailor to Panama's most powerful men." It could be good, or it could suck, but sometimes I like to take a chance.
If I had more time there, and more money to spend, I would have grabbed a lot more. But I think I did well - I got some new reads, didn't break the bank, and didn't go overboard on the book-grabbing.
I wish the owners of The Book Store well and thank them for their service, even if their selection didn't impress me.
