I'm VERY pleased with "Down The Old Plank Road." It's not just a good Chieftains album, but a good bluegrass album. It features so many legends and legends in the making - Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill. All of the musicians on the album give awesome performances, and the Chieftains fit right in.

The album is not only a collaboration between the Chieftains and the other musicians, but another piece of the puzzle of the link between American bluegrass and folk music and Celtic folk music from Europe. With the Chieftains' help, the link is a little clearer in these songs. One thing that I've noticed is the similarities between Irish and rural American song traditions. Many of the songs came straight from the old country, and others are in a similar style. Take a bluegrass song, add a different melody and slightly different instruments, and it could be an Irish song.
