I can never post too many things about music! Here's the Top Five On Friday:
Top 5 "Super" songs...As always interpret this as you see fit. Go ahead be creative!
I'm going to post TWO lists for this! One with songs that have "Super" in the title, and another with five super Jimi Hendrix songs.
List #1:
1) Rick James - Superfreak
2) Joss Stone - Super Duper Love
3) Stevie Wonder (and Ray Vaughan!) - Superstitious
4) Five For Fighting - Superman
5) Jimi Hendrix - Astro Man (well, it has a super hero in the title)
List #2 (all by Jimi Hendrix):
1) "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)". I'm listening to this one right now, and it's such an amazing song! The main song part is great, really powerful stuff. The rest of the song has so much experimentation and crazy sound effects, great drumming and of course great guitar playing! I think it's one of the best things Jimi ever did.
2) "Red House (Isle Of Wight version)". Jimi never played the blues dirtier than he did during this song. He starts out with a slow, killer blues jam, sings the verses beautifully, and then goes wild with some insane guitar shredding. Easily the best version of Red House out there.
3) "Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (Woodstock Version)". This is one of Hendrix's best songs, and the version he did at Woodstock is the best version of it. He plays it pretty fast, and with a lot of intensity. His soloing goes on and on and gets crazier and crazier. You can tell he was having a great time playing it.
4) "Bold As Love". His solo at the end is just incredible. He wasn't just a good technical guitar player, but could also put a lot of feeling into his songs. This is a great example of that.
5) "Third Stone From The Sun". Two years before this song came out, Jimi was playing as an R&B sideman. He went from that to this in that short period of time. This song is a virtual encyclopedia of Hendrix's best studio tricks (minus the wah-wah, which would come a little later). It sounds freaky enough today, imagine what it sounded like in 1967!
