Strong rumors are popping up again that Billy Corgan is coming close to reforming the Smashing Pumpkins. Apparently he and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain are almost ready to record new studio material, and former bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur says she'd be willing to help the band out if they need her. As a Smashing Pumpkins fan (after they broke up, sadly), I feel I should address these rumors.

I think Billy's intent is to form a rock band called The Smashing Pumpkins. Whether that will include James, D'Arcy, either or neither remains to be seen, but I think Billy will use the Smashing Pumpkins name no matter what form the band takes. I suspect he realizes that the reputation of the Pumpkins "brand name" is still valuable and that he stands to gain a lot if he returns to making rock music and performing the old songs again.

As a Pumpkins fan, I at least want Iha and a female bassist in the band for it to really be the Smashing Pumpkins. I'll be happy if Billy and Jimmy at the very least return to making powerful/beautiful rock music like they used to, but I'd be even happier if my desired Pumpkins lineup is formed. I really don't think they'll get D'Arcy on board, but is it really the Pumpkins without James? Whatever happens, I think Billy's primary goal is to relaunch the Pumpkins as a "brand" and concept. If it results in music as wonderful as Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie, that's all that matters to me. Please make it happen, Billy.
