My favorite lines from Blood and Chocolate by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, so far:
I want to show you how I love you
When you're over me, there's no one above you
- from "Uncomplicated"
But you make him sound like frozen food, his love will last forever
- from "I Hope You're Happy Now"
I knew I was in trouble but I thought I was in hell
- from "Tokyo Storm Warning"
What do we care if the world is a joke
We'll give it a big kiss, we'll give it a poke
- from "Tokyo Storm Warning"
For Teresa is a waitress though she's now known as Juanita
In a tango bar in Stanley or in Puerto Margarita
She's the sweetest and the sauciest, the lovliest and the naughtiest
She's Miss Buenos Aires in a world of lacy lingerie
- from "Tokyo Storm Warning"
Here comes Mister Misery
Looking for a place for his mouth to shoot
Saying "You'd look cute in your birthday suit"
- from "Home Is Anywhere Where You Hang Your Head"
And the world has wiped its mouth since then
Or maybe it was yawning
- from "Home Is Anywhere You Hang Your Head"
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
- from "I Want You"
Now it's my turn to talk and your turn to think
Your turn to buy and my turn to drink
- from "Blue Chair"
"Filthy words on children's lips are better, my dear spouse
Than if I were to speak my mind about this house"
- from "Battered Old Bird"
He says "One day I'll throw away all of my cares
And it is always Christmas in a cupboard at the top of the stairs"
- from "Battered Old Bird"
And I find it hard to swallow good advice
Like going down three times to only come up twice
- from "Crimes Of Paris"
You can take the truthful things you've said to me
And fit them on the head of a pin
- from "Poor Napoleon"
One day they'll probably make a movie out of all of this
There won't even have to be a murder, just a slow dissolving kiss
- from "Poor Napoleon"
You'll be the one who stands out in the dark
Even when you're all dressed in black
- from "Next Time Round"
And my absolute favorite . . .
The truth can't hurt you it's just like the dark
It scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark
- from "I Want You"
My favorite songs from Blood and Chocolate so far:
I Hope You're Happy Now, Tokyo Storm Warning, I Want You, Battered Old Bird, Poor Napoleon
Random observations about Blood and Chocolate:
It isn't quite the aggressive rock album that I was hoping for, but it's still incredibly good. The lyrics are as delicious as ever (when you can understand them) and the hooks are as catchy as anything I've heard by Elvis so far.
The pairing of "Home Is Anywhere You Hang Your Head" and "I Want You" next to each other on the album is quite interesting. Why? Because, in my view, "Home" is a song about a desperate, obsessed man in love from a sympathetic, third-person perspective. "I Want You" is a song from the perspective of that desperate, obsessed man. Kind of cool, I think.

You've picked out some of my favorite lyrics.
I think I'm going to have to listen to that CD again today.
