Tuesday Tunes–10/5/10

This week’s topic is music videos.

1. What is your favorite music video?

Probably “Weapon Of Choice” by Fatboy Slim.  You can’t go wrong with Christopher Walken dancing around in a hotel.

2. Do you think that videos are as important today as they were when Mtv started out?

I think they’re much less commercially important than they were in the 80s and 90s, but just as much, if not more, artistically important.  Some of the most creative, interesting music videos I’ve ever seen have come out in the last four or five years.  They’re far more interesting than the old “concert footage” standby.  Music videos can now supplement an artist or band’s creativity instead of just advertising the latest hit single.

3. In your opinion, which artist consistently does or did the best videos?

Lately, I’d have to say OK Go.  Every time they create a video, there’s an instant buzz as people wonder what wacky concept they’ve come up with this time.  The latest concept is dogs and furniture.

Tuesday Tunes - 8/31/10

Today's tunes:

What new or upcoming releases are you eagerly waiting to buy?

School of Seven Bells' latest album Disconnect From Desire came out last month, and I'd definitely like to buy it.  It sounds amazing.  I'm also looking forward to Pete Yorn's new self-titled album later in September.  It's supposed to be a rocker, which I always love from Pete.

Aside from those, I'm not sure what else is coming out this year that I like.  Maybe next year we'll get an Afro Celt Sound System album?  I sure hope so!

Tuesday Tunes – 8/24/10

Tunes:

Tell us about your favorite "musical things" from this summer; concerts, albums etc.

Well, the only concert I’ve seen all year was just a few days ago when I saw Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.  That was a good one, for sure.  I had lots of fun and really got into it and felt the energy.

As far as albums, I’ve mostly been buying up Beatles albums this summer.  My top pick out of those would be A Hard Day’s Night.  Not a bad song on that album!  I also bought Robert Randolph’s new one and a compilation of jazz pianist Erroll Garner.  Both are absolutely amazing.  I’d have to give the crown to Robert Randolph, though, because he released his best album yet.

The biggest news for me this summer when it comes to music is the new Ipod Classic that I bought.  I can now carry my entire music collection with me in my pocket.  It’s the best!

Tuesday Tunes – 8/10/10

Tunes:

Tell us your most played:

Go to your music player/last.fm etc and tell us

Your top 3 artists, songs and albums.

Artists:  The Beatles, BeauSoleil, Elvis Costello.
Songs: “Get Back” by The Beatles; “Glass Onion” by The Beatles; “Don’t Worry Baby” by Los Lobos.  Funny, I don’t remember listening to Glass Onion that much.
Albums: last.fm doesn’t have data for my most played albums, but you can bet the Beatles are somewhere on that list.

Now tell us:
What music player do you use on your computer?

I always use Winamp.  I’ve been using it since my first computer.

Do you own an mp3 player? What kind?

I own a recently-purchased iPod Classic.

Have you named your mp3 player?

No, I haven’t.  “The Beast” might be a good name for it, though.

Tuesday Tunes – 8/3/10

As always, brought to you by Music Memoirs:

This week's topic is introductions: Tell us about your musical self, what you love about music, your favorite bands, if you play any instruments etc.

My name is Russ.  I’m 30 years old, born and raised in the state of Oregon, and I love music.  I don’t know what my first musical memory is, but I think it had something to do with a Disney album.  I also have vague memories of hearing Jimmy Buffett and Anne Murray, although these early experiences didn’t shape my later musical tastes.

As an older child and teen, I was very much interested in radio.  I owned quite a few cassettes too, but I listened to a lot of radio too.  I always tuned in to the popular Top 40 station and listened to whatever was playing big on radio or MTV.  I was a big MTV watcher as a youth.  Around the age of 9 or 10, I got interested in rap and hip hop music.  It was quite different back then.  I think I just wanted to listen to something different from my parents.  I claimed to HATE rock and roll, although I think I secretly liked it.

The less said about my hip hop days, the better.  I listened to a lot of good stuff in the genre, but also a lot of crap.  I also continued listening to whatever was popular on radio.  My favorite CDs were the Jock Jamz collections.  Embarrassing, really.  Of course, I HATED country.

Around my senior year of high school, I started getting into other styles of music.  Jazz, for instance.  It was a short-lived fascination (although I’m getting back into it now).  I was particularly drawn to tunes by the Gershwins after seeing a musical that included many Gershwin compositions.  Later that year, I bought a sampler of modern Scandinavian folk music.  I instantly fell in love with that, and during my first year of college I was listening to and buying many of the albums on that compilation.  To make a long story short, that led to explorations in other types of “world” music including Celtic, Cajun and others.  One thing kind of lead to the next.

A few years later, I started getting interested in rock music for the first time.  A buddy of mine was learning guitar and showed me some songs he really liked.  For some reason, at that point in my life I was more receptive to it and I’ve never looked back.

I do like to explore new genres and bands, yet I’m also kind of set in my ways musically.  I don’t get into the whole indie rock scene where you worship bands that aren’t even signed to a label yet.  I think I’m a generation too old for that sort of thing.  Some of my favorite artists today include:

Afro Celt Sound System, Jeff Buckley, BeauSoleil, Smashing Pumpkins, Elvis Costello, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Altan, The Who, Nickel Creek, Neil Finn, and Los Lobos.  Those are just some of the artists I have in my collection.

I own somewhere between 200 and 300 CDs.  I prefer to buy my music.  I like having a physical copy with pretty liner notes.  I also like the ritual of buying music.  It’s not always fun to get exactly what you want when you want it.  The hunt, the anticipation, is where the thrill is for me.

Genre-wise, I’m pretty open, but I tend to prefer Classic Rock, Celtic, Nordic, and Singer-songwriter.  Celtic would have to be my favorite genre.  It’s just so much fun to listen to.

I don’t play any instruments, unfortunately.  I’ve tried playing guitar, and I own a tin whistle, but I seem to have no musical talent whatsoever.  I guess some people are put here to appreciate music instead of making it.

What do I love about music?  How long do you have?  That could be an entirely new post.  Most of all, I like melody.  A song must have a strong melody if I’m going to really enjoy it.  I like hearing all the little details, the way each instrument plays a part in the whole.  I like music made with passion, and without any desire to become commercially successful.  I appreciate musicians who play because they love it.  Lastly, I love music because of how it makes me feel.  I can’t explain that, but that’s why they’re called feelings.

That was a long, rambling explanation of my history and present with music.  What does my future hold?  More music, of course.  Stay tuned as I tell you what I’m listening to along my journey, as I always do on my blog.

Tuesday Tunes – 7/27/10

Tuesday Tunes:

Here's a musical either or. Tell us which you like better.

Musician's/Band's biography or Musician/Band's biopic

I like the biography better, because biopics tend to be formulaic.  There was even a parody movie about them called “Walk Hard.”

Discovering a new band or rediscovering an old band

I think discovering a new band is always more fun.  It’s like falling in love for the first time.

Listening to the radio or watching Mtv

Radio wins by default.  Do they even play music on MTV anymore?

Concert photos or a magazine spread

I’m thinking concert photos.  They’re more “real.”

Top Five On Friday (and more) – 7/23/10

I’m going to do the Tuesday Tunes as well as the Top Five today.  I need to catch up.

Tell us about the WORST concert experience you ever had.

I think the worst I’ve concert experience for me was the time I saw a band-not-to-be-named (because I’m too nice) and they started playing an hour and a half after the show was scheduled to start.  Normally that wouldn’t be too much of a problem (except the boredom of waiting), but I was to be given a ride home only an hour after the band actually started.  I didn’t get to see that much of the show.  I was disappointed!

Top 5 songs you think of when you hear the word "old"

1)  “Love Me Do” by The Beatles
2)  “Hound Dog” by Elvis
3)  “In The Mood” by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
4)  “I’m Going Home” from the Cold Mountain soundtrack
5)  “If I Had My Way” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band

Tuesday Tunes - 7/6/10

Tunes:

Tell us about your favorite music player: stereo, ipod etc and why you love it so much

Well, I have more than one.  The first is my computer itself.  I have all my CDs ripped to the hard drive, so I can listen to whatever I want whenever I want.  I just search and listen.  I can also listen to internet radio or streaming sites.  The speakers on my system are completely awesome -- they even have a subwoofer!  Winamp is an excellent music player for Windows that I use all the time.  When I'm at home, my computer is my music center.

My other favorite music player hasn't arrived yet.  I just purchased a brand new iPod classic.  I've had a Nano for three years now, and I'm ready for something with a larger capacity.  I love my little Nano, but it can only handle a portion of all the music I own.  I'm tired of having to choose what I put on there.  I want it all on there!  So I bought a new black Classic iPod with 160 gigabytes of storage.  I probably won't ever fill that up!  It's going to be awesome, although I'll have to get used to the bigger size of the player itself.

Tuesday Tunes - 6/29/10

Tunes:

Here are a few questions for you, it's an either or. Feel free to tell us why you picked the answer you did.

CDs or Digital Downloads

CDs.  You can put them on your computer, and you still have the physical disc as a backup.  Plus -- pretty liner notes and discs.

Concert Tickets or a Concert DVD

Concert tickets, of course.  Nothing can replace the experience of seeing it live, even if it sucks.

A Stereo System or an Ipod

This is a tough one.  If I had to have either one or the other, I'd go for the stereo system.  Music just sounds better on a decent, good or great system.

A Large Venue or An Intimate Club Show

Intimate club show, of course!  The closer you are to the stage, the more of a connection you can feel to the artist.

Tuesday Tunes - 6/22/10

Another round of Tunes:

Its a beautiful hot summer day. You've been invited to a picnic and you've be told you are in charge of the music. Tell us what your playlist would be!

Narrative, or list?  I think I'll just do a list.

1)  "Fun" by Sly and the Family Stone
2)  "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph and the Family Band
3)  "Good Day Sunshine" by The Beatles
4)  "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles
5)  "Ya-Ya" by Buckwheat Zydeco
6)  "Zydeco Boogaloo" by Buckwheat Zydeco
7)  "Alive" by Pete Yorn
8)  "La Bamba" by Los Lobos
9)  "We Got The Beat" by The Go-Gos
10)  "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

Tuesday Tunes (or Wednesday tunes?)

Just for fun, you get the Tuesday tunes on a Wednesday:

Are you going to see any shows this summer?

I'm not really planning on it so far.  I'd love to go see either Ringo Starr or Willie Nelson, but I don't know if I can find anyone to go with me, and I don't know if I want to spend that kind of cash on a concert.

How important is seeing a band live to you?

It really depends on how good the band is.  There are certain groups or artists who are known for putting on a good show, and those are the ones you really want to see.  Others, I don't really care one way or the other.  I enjoy their music whether I see them live or not.  Basically, if it's a group I truly care about, I'll make the effort to see them.

What band would you like to see in concert most?

Really?  You needed to ask that one?  You really need me to tell you I'd like to see Afro Celt Sound System in concert before I kick the bucket?  You don't, if you read this blog on a regular basis.

Tuesday Tunes - 6/1/10

Tunes:

What new releases are you looking forward to this summer?

The only one I know of is Robert Randolph and the Family Band's We Walk This Road.  It should be interesting, although probably not as fun as their funk-based work in the past.

What music makes you think of summer?

Well, there's the Beach Boys.  That's pretty obvious.  I think maybe I'll add Zydeco music to that list.  It's made for hot days and lovely nights.

What's the best song you can think of to play with the top down/or windows down on a hot summer day?

Off the top of my head, "Wah Wah" by George Harrison.

Tuesday Tunes - 5/25/10

Here's another post for my poor, neglected blog.  From Music Memoirs, of course:

Who are your favorites:

Guitarist:  David Gilmour (from Pink Floyd).  His tone is simply amazing and so emotional.
Drummer:  Mitch Mitchell (from Jimi Hendrix Experience).  Not as crazy as Moon, but much more talented.
Bassist:  Paul McCartney.
Vocalist (Male and Female):  Male -- Jeff Buckley and Roy Orbison.  Female -- Triona Ni Dhomhnaill.
Songwriter: Again, Paul McCartney.  Anyone can write complex songs.  Writing simple songs that say a whole lot in as few words as possible takes quite a bit of skill.  As Strunk and White say -- "Omit needless words."  Paul can do that.

Tuesday Tunes - 5/11/10

Tunes:

Storm: "Ready For The Storm" by Deanta
Dark: "Dark As A Dungeon"
Late: "Late" by Ben Folds
Heavy: "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf (Heavy Metal Thunder, baby!)
Television: Marquee Moon
Leave: That Jojo chick who used to be on MTV but has now disappeared.
Busy: Jack White (when is he not busy?)
Smooth: Santana and Rob Thomas (that was a HUGE hit!)
Gentle: "Swallow" by My Bloody Valentine
Hurt: The Man In Black

Tuesday Tunes - 5/4/10

Oh boy, is this late.

Who do you think is the coolest rock mom?

Does Ann Wilson have kids?  If so, it's her.  It's too bad Joan Jett doesn't have kids, because she'd easily be the coolest.

What rocker mom are you really glad, isn't your mom?

Courtney Love.

Do you think you'd like to be the child of a rock n' roll mom?

It might be interesting, but it would also mean that mom has to take a lot of time for non-family stuff.  Maybe I could be a rock and roll child for just one day?  I don't know who I'd choose, though.

Tuesday Tunes - 4/20/10

Happy Tuesday!

This week's theme is "Radio"

Radio inspired many songs, what is your favorite?

"Radio Radio" by Elvis Costello and the Attractions is one of the best, although radio really just inspired Elvis' hate on that one.

Do you still listen to the radio? Why/Why not?

I listen to radio, but I listen on the internet.  There are so many interesting stations out there.  You can hear pretty much whatever you're in the mood for.

What's your favorite station?

On regular radio, I always like KZEL, the classic rock station.  You can never go wrong with a little "More Than A Feeling" while getting ready for the day.

Are there any songs you discovered on the radio? What are they?

There are many, although I can only think of songs I've discovered through internet radio.  Lately, I've heard "Wired For Light" by School of Seven Bells, which turned me on to them.  Farther back, I learned about The Jayhawks and Missy Higgins from listening to internet radio.  The same is true for Natalie MacMaster.  I've listened to internet radio for many years, and I hope it never goes away.

Top Five On Friday - 4/16/10

It's the Top Five!

Top 5 songs you love to hear live

1)  "La Chanson de Mardis Gras" by BeauSoleil.  This song is always best when done live, with as much intensity as possible.

2)  "Dream In Blue" by Los Lobos.  I know I'm in for a good time as soon as I hear that cool drum beat and that blistering guitar lick.

3)  "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley.  I don't think I've ever heard him do this song the same way twice.

4)  "Tullochgorum" by Natalie MacMaster.  Natalie usually plays this in her live shows, and it's always the highlight of the night.

5)  "Red House" by Jimi Hendrix.  Just like Jeff Buckley, Jimi never played this song the same way twice.  The version on the Isle of Wight concert is the best, I think.

Tuesday Tunes - 4/13/10

Tuesday Tunes:

A little fun what if:

If money were no object:

What musical things would you buy?

I'd probably buy a lot of music memorabilia.  Famous guitars and such.  First thing I'd do is go out and get the Beatles box set in stereo and mono.  I'd buy some actual music, but not a lot because having everything at once isn't much fun.

You know, I never have a decent answer for these types of questions.

How far would you travel for a concert? What bands/artists would you see?

If money were truly no object, I'd travel anywhere that's safe.  I'd see the usual - Afro Celts, Smashing Pumpkins, Paul McCartney, etc.  I'd probably go see a lot of European bands that don't travel to Oregon very much.

I never have a very good answer for this question, either.

Would you try to make music of your own?

Most likely not.  I own a tin whistle, and while it seems like it would be simple enough to learn, I can't really play it at all.  Music moves too fast for me.  If my hands were larger, maybe I'd learn some guitar chords and strum, but that's about it.

Tuesday Tunes - 4/6/10

Time for tunes!

This week's theme is "Dinner Music."

You are throwing a party...and with the changes in courses, there will be a change in music. What do you play for the 5 courses of a meal?

Those courses being "soup, appetizer, salad, main dinner, and dessert."

Soup:  You want something light, refreshing and soul-satisfying.  I think "Lorelai" by Cocteau Twins fits the bill.

Appetizer:  Something fun to share that will take your mind off your hunger but not completely fill you up.  "I Saw Her Standing There" by the Beatles, maybe?

Salad:  Something leafy, green and natural, of course.  "An Gaoth Aneas" by The Chieftains.

Main dinner:  Something substantial, the main event.  "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin, of course.

Dessert:  Something sweet, pleasing, yummy.  "One In A Million" by Aaliyah.

Tuesday Tunes - 3/30/10

Tunes on a Tuesday:

There are a lot of movies made about rock bands. What artist/band do you think should be immortalized on the big screen? (Feel free to cast the leading roles if you so choose)

I'd pay good money to see a Smashing Pumpkins movie.  The drama!  The fighting!  The endless female bassists!  Of course, the music would be awesome.

Billy Corgan could be played by Michael Rosenbaum.  It's hard to find actors who look like Billy, but I think Michael is young enough and bald enough.  For D'Arcy, I'm thinking Renee Zellweger.  Jimmy Chamberlin looks a lot like Clive Owen, I think.  James Iha?  I have no clue!

Which do you like better, movies about music or movies that are musicals and why?

I like movies about music better because I like music, not people singing in situations that don't call for it.  Chicago and the Blues Brothers are exceptions to this.

Tell us your favorite movie soundtrack and why

Right now, I like the Cold Mountain soundtrack a lot because I'm really interested in that style of music lately.  Also, it has a lot of good stuff on it.  I reviewed it here recently.
